Stripe Fees Explained for Freelancers

Understand how Stripe payment processing fees are calculated and how they impact your freelance invoices.

Stripe Fees Explained for Freelancers

Stripe is a popular payment processing platform for freelancers to accept credit card payments, but their processing fees can take a noticeable bite out of your income if you don't account for them.

The Standard Stripe Fee

For a US card payment, 2.9% + $0.30 is a commonly used example fee assumption. Actual Stripe pricing can vary by country, payment method, account, transaction type, and applicable Stripe terms.

International and Currency Fees

International cards and currency conversion may add fees, but the applicable amount depends on your account, payment method, country, and current Stripe pricing. Check Stripe's pricing for the transaction before quoting a client.

How to Handle Fees

You have two choices as a freelancer: absorb the fees as a cost of doing business, or pass an estimated fee on to your client where appropriate. The amount to charge depends on the fee assumptions entered into the calculator; simply adding a percentage may not cover a fixed fee.
